Dodoma. The minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, led a consultative meeting with representatives from the Tanzania Brokers Association (TBA) on April 21, 2026.
This strategic session was primarily focused on addressing the prevailing challenges and untapped opportunities within the gemstone sector, with a specific emphasis on bolstering transparency and improving the overall business environment for precious stones, including the nation’s signature Tanzanite.
The meeting, held at the Mining Commission offices, facilitated a comprehensive dialogue regarding the management of brokerage licences and the integration of brokers into the formal economic framework to enhance their national contribution.
During the proceedings, Mr Mavunde underscored the absolute necessity of adhering to established legal procedures and utilising official trade systems to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity within the industry.
Mr Mavunde reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive atmosphere for investment and revenue growth.
He stated that the administration remains dedicated to incorporating stakeholder feedback into its policy-making process to drive sustainable growth.
To this end, he issued an immediate directive to the Mining Commission to expedite technical improvements to the gemstone trading systems, specifically targeting those administrative adjustments that do not require legislative amendments.
Furthermore, Mr Mavunde announced plans for the government to conduct extensive geological research in the Lemshuku area.
This initiative aims to identify and quantify diverse gemstone deposits in the Manyara Region, thereby diversifying the local mining economy beyond its traditional reliance on Tanzanite.
By expanding the scope of exploration, the government intends to broaden trade horizons and significantly increase the total value generated by the minerals sector for the benefit of the Republic.
