Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, has pledged that the government will take immediate action based on recommendations from a 20-member team of experts, even if it means demolishing unsafe buildings in Kariakoo.
This statement was made following the tragic collapse of a four-story building, which resulted in 20 deaths and over 80 injuries.
The incident, which occurred four days ago, has deeply affected both the families involved and the nation at large.
Dr Samia, who was attending the G20 Summit in Brazil at the time of the incident, ordered Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa to form a team of experts to investigate the safety of Kariakoo buildings.
Upon returning to Tanzania, the President wasted no time and visited the site to assess the situation and offer her condolences to those impacted by the tragedy.
At Kariakoo, President Dr Samia stated: “We will follow all advice provided by the 20-member team of experts appointed by the Prime Minister.”
“This building collapse is one of the greatest blows our country has ever experienced. It is a major lesson for us as a government to focus on the safety of Kariakoo buildings.”
Regarding the victims, Dr. Samia reported that, of the injured, only three remain hospitalized, with the rest being discharged.
She concluded by thanking the Prime Minister, the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, security agencies, hospitals that provided free care to the injured, and all Tanzanians for their efforts in the rescue operation.
