London. The governments of Tanzania and Qatar have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates at a ceremony held here in the city.
The event, conducted on November 24, 2025 on the sidelines of the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly, brought together senior officials and a wide range of maritime sector stakeholders.
Tanzania was represented by the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr Mohamed Malick Salum, while Qatar’s signatory was the Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport, Engineer Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Sulait.
The MoU aims to enhance competency standards, safety and quality within the seafaring profession, while deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
The agreement is expected to expand employment opportunities for Tanzanian seafarers on vessels registered or operated by Qatari companies, as they will no longer be subjected to repetitive certificate validation processes.
It also paves the way for stronger cooperation in maritime transport between the two countries.
Furthermore, the arrangement will allow seafarers to access more competitive global labour markets and benefit from increased exposure to advanced technologies and high safety standards.
It will also bolster Tanzania’s maritime training capacity, as national institutions and certifications gain wider international recognition.
