Young Africans (Yanga) were once again forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Mtibwa Sugar, extending their recent run to three consecutive stalemates in the Mainland Premier League and underlining the growing pressure despite their position at the summit of the table.
The match, played today, Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma, was a tightly contested affair, with both teams battling not only each other but also difficult playing conditions, as the pitch was heavily affected by persistent rainfall before and during the encounter, making fluid football difficult.
Yanga made an encouraging start to the game, showing intent and composure in possession, and were rewarded in the 24th minute when Pacome Zouzoua calmly found the back of the net to register his fourth league goal of the season and give his side a deserved lead.
For large parts of the match, the Jangwani-based side appeared to be in control, managing the tempo and limiting Mtibwa’s attacking opportunities, but their inability to convert additional chances into goals ultimately proved costly.
As the game approached its conclusion, Yanga’s failure to put the match beyond reach came back to haunt them, conceding a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in the 90+2 minute through Ismail Mhesa, who capitalised on a lapse in concentration to rescue a point for Mtibwa Sugar.
The result takes Yanga to 38 points from 16 matches, ensuring they remain at the top of the league standings, but it also highlights a worrying trend of dropped points that could become significant as the title race intensifies in the coming weeks.
This draw marks Yanga’s third in a row, having previously been held to a goalless draw by Azam on March 15, followed by another 0-0 result against TRA on March 18, indicating a pattern of struggles particularly in breaking down opponents and finishing chances.
While the team remains unbeaten in this run, the accumulation of draws suggests that their attacking efficiency has dipped slightly, and there is a growing need to rediscover the cutting edge that defined their performances last season.
For Mtibwa Sugar, the point earned is valuable in their own campaign, as they remain ninth in the standings with 22 points from 17 matches, continuing their push to climb higher up the table.
The league will now take a two-week break to accommodate FIFA international fixtures, offering Yanga an opportunity to regroup, reassess their recent performances and address areas of concern before competition resumes on April 4, 2025.
Looking at the broader picture, current statistics suggest that Yanga may find it challenging to replicate the remarkable standards they set during the 2024-2025 season, which saw them dominate the league comprehensively.
In that campaign, Yanga secured their fourth consecutive title with an outstanding 82 points from 30 matches, winning 27 games, drawing just one and losing only twice in a display of consistency rarely matched in the league.
They were equally impressive in both attack and defence, scoring a league-high 83 goals while conceding only 10, underlining their dominance across all departments of the pitch.
This season, however, presents a different challenge, particularly in terms of maintaining the same pace in point accumulation, as the increased number of draws has already created a gap compared to their previous campaign.
Yanga have dropped points in matches against Mbeya City, Simba, TRA and Azam, and while they remain in control at the top, such results could prove decisive if not addressed promptly.
Consequently, the team will need to raise their performance levels in the remaining fixtures, especially in converting chances, if they are to maintain their lead and successfully defend their title.
In the attacking department, there is clear room for improvement, with the team having scored 32 goals so far a figure that reflects a slower scoring rate compared to last season and one that must improve in the second half of the campaign.
On a more positive note, Yanga’s defensive structure remains solid and reliable, having conceded very few goals, which provides a strong platform upon which they can build as they aim to sustain their title challenge.
