Tanzania plans a new mineral processing centre

This development was formally announced in Parliament on April 15, 2026, by the Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa

Dodoma. The government of Tanzania has confirmed plans to construct a new model mineral processing centre in the Mwakitolyo area of the Shinyanga Region.

This development was formally announced in Parliament on April 15, 2026, by the Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa.

Dr Kiruswa was responding to the question by Mwanahamisi Athuman who had requested clarification regarding government strategies to establish a mineral college within the region.

Dr Kiruswa emphasised that the government recognises the strategic importance of Shinyanga to the national mining sector.

The administration aims to empower local citizens through improved technical capacity.

This initiative specifically targets the advancement of youths and women involved in mineral research, extraction, and processing activities.

The upcoming centre will serve as a hub for refining these essential industry skills.

Regarding educational infrastructure, Dr Kiruswa noted that the government currently utilises established institutions in Dar es Salaam and Tabora for mining scholarship.

These facilities continue to provide the necessary academic framework for the sector.

There are no immediate plans for a full college in Shinyanga, as existing centres are being upgraded to meet national demand.

In his concluding remarks, Dr Kiruswa urged the public to take full advantage of current state-run training opportunities.

He directed young Tanzanians toward the Tanzania Gemological Centre in Arusha.

He also highlighted the Mineral Resources Institute in Dodoma as a premier venue for professional development.

These institutions remain central to the government’s mission of professionalising the domestic mining workforce.
