Tanzania invests over Sh127bn in rural electrification in Mwanza Region

Under the leadership of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government has prioritised the extension of electricity to the smallest administrative hamlets

Mwanza. Significant progress in Tanzania’s energy sector has been achieved through an investment exceeding Sh127.7 billion.

These funds were dedicated to extending clean energy services across the rural areas of the Mwanza Region.

This strategic financial commitment has actively stimulated economic growth and enhanced the quality of social services within these communities.

The Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Said Mtanda, disclosed these figures during the inaugural session between the Rural Energy Agency and the Energy Development Partners Group.

The meeting served as a platform for the agency to present its operational plans and budget for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Under the leadership of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government has prioritised the extension of electricity to the smallest administrative hamlets.

Mr Mtanda expressed profound gratitude to international development partners for their substantial contributions to these milestones.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant in protecting power infrastructure against vandalism.

Furthermore, he encouraged both the Rural Energy Agency and development partners to increase investments in clean cooking energy solutions.

Chairman of the Rural Energy Board, Major General (Retired), Jacob Kingu, noted that development partners maintain high confidence in the management of these funds.

He affirmed that the Board remains committed to ensuring value for money across all projects.

This transparency fosters continued cooperation between the Tanzanian government and international stakeholders.

The director general of the Rural Energy Agency, Mr Hassan Saidy, emphasised that the core objective remains the empowerment of the common citizen.

While building infrastructure is essential, the ultimate success is measured by actual household connections.

The agency aims to ensure that the benefits of reliable electricity translate directly into improved living standards for rural residents.
