The purchase of Ford Ranger vehicles equipped with laser technology by Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) marks a major step forward in strengthening the safety of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The vehicles, specially modified into Hi-Rail inspection units, will be used to inspect and monitor the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) while utilizing advanced laser systems to detect track faults and other potential hazards faster and more accurately than traditional inspection methods.
Why TRC invested in these vehicles

These vehicles are highly efficient, durable, and capable of quickly switching from road to rail operations, making them ideal for routine patrols and rapid emergency response.
Special modifications
All vehicles have been fitted with specialized rail wheel systems, enabling them to operate smoothly both on roads and railway tracks.
How they will help bridge the inspection gap
First, they will enable rapid response: inspectors will be able to reach problem areas much faster, reducing service interruptions and improving passenger safety.
Second, they provide wider inspection coverage: the vehicles can patrol long stretches of railway lines, including remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The laser system installed on these vehicles analyzes the condition of the railway tracks by measuring track alignment accuracy and detecting faults that cannot be identified with the naked eye.
Early detection of defects helps prevent accidents, protect passengers, and ensure efficient railway operations.
Laser inspection systems use highly precise laser beams to measure track conditions and monitor rail surface quality.
Precision: Lasers can detect even the smallest defects in track alignment.
Speed: The technology enables real-time monitoring while the vehicle is moving along the railway.
Applications: It can detect cracks, weak ground sections, and even monitor overhead railway electrical systems.
TRC and passenger reactions
“These are not just transport vehicles; they are our eyes on the railway,” said TRC track inspector Manyama Mazula.
Passengers have also expressed increased confidence in railway safety.
“Knowing that TRC can identify problems before they occur makes us feel much safer,” said Akwilina Msangi, a frequent SGR passenger.
Another passenger, identified as Zuberi Mkwama, praised Tanzania Railways Corporation for purchasing the vehicles, saying they will continue to ensure the safety of both passengers and cargo.
The bigger picture
This investment reflects TRC’s commitment to modernization and continuous improvement of railway services.
By integrating modern inspection vehicles with laser technology, Tanzania is aligning itself with international railway safety standards.
This move will help ensure that the SGR line from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma remains a safe, reliable, and efficient backbone of national transportation.
