Tanzania unveils electric vehicle charging stations

Among the flagship projects introduced is a comprehensive national plan for constructing EV charging stations across the country

Dodoma. The Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) headquarters in the capital Dodoma on June 11, 2026.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting and laying of the foundation stone marked a significant milestone in Tanzania’s shift towards sustainable infrastructure.

The launch coincided with the signing and unveiling of several clean energy initiatives hosted at the Mashujaa Grounds in Jamatini, Dodoma.

Among the flagship projects introduced is a comprehensive national plan for constructing EV charging stations across the country.

Alongside the transport initiatives, the government launched an innovative On-Bill Financing (OBF) scheme.

This programme enables Tanesco customers to acquire electric cooking stoves through affordable credit, with repayments seamlessly integrated into their monthly electricity bills.

“This project aims to directly uplift the lives of citizens and Tanesco customers by providing clean, affordable, and highly efficient energy solutions for both transport and domestic cooking,” Mr Ndejembi stated during the ceremony.

The double-pronged approach addresses two of the region’s most pressing environmental challenges: urban vehicular emissions and the traditional reliance on biomass for cooking.

By integrating EV infrastructure with accessible domestic clean cooking technology, the ministry is charting a sustainable economic path for Tanzanian citizens.
