Gueye keeps Simba breathing down Yanga’s neck

With just four matches remaining before the curtain falls on the season, Simba's victory means the gap separating the two Tanzanian giants remains only two points

The battle for the 2025/26 Mainland Premier League title took another dramatic twist on Sunday, June 14, 2026, as Simba edged Pamba Jiji 2-1 at KMC Complex in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam to ensure the championship race with arch-rivals Yanga remains as fierce as ever.

With just four matches remaining before the curtain falls on the season, Simba’s victory means the gap separating the two Tanzanian giants remains only two points.

Yanga continue to lead the standings with 63 points, while Simba remain firmly in pursuit on 61, setting up what promises to be a thrilling finish to one of the closest title races in recent years.

The atmosphere at KMC Complex reflected the significance of the occasion, with Simba knowing that anything less than victory would have handed Yanga a significant advantage in the race for the crown.

Instead, Steve Barker’s men showed character, resilience and determination to collect all three points and keep their championship hopes very much alive.

It was Simba who made the brighter start and they were rewarded in the seventh minute when midfielder Elie Mpanzu opened the scoring.

The Congolese star finished off a well-crafted attacking move after being released by a clever pass from Neo Maema, sending the home supporters into celebration.

However, Pamba Jiji demonstrated why they have been one of the most competitive sides in the league this season by responding positively.

Their efforts paid off in the 18th minute when they levelled the scores through a well-worked move that originated from Zabona Mayombya, with the finish leaving Simba’s defence exposed.

The equaliser transformed the match into a tense and entertaining contest, with both teams creating opportunities in search of a decisive goal.

Simba enjoyed more possession and attacking momentum, but Pamba Jiji remained dangerous on the counter-attack.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 64th minute through Senegalese striker Libasse Gueye.

Showing composure and quality inside the penalty area, the forward produced an excellent finish that beat goalkeeper Yona Amos and restored Simba’s lead.

The goal ultimately proved decisive, ensuring Simba claimed a victory that could have enormous implications in the title race.

Beyond the three points, the result further underlined Simba’s impressive consistency in recent months.

The Msimbazi giants have now gone 21 consecutive Mainland Premier League matches without defeat, an extraordinary run that has transformed them into serious challengers for the championship.

The last time Simba tasted defeat in the league was on December 7, 2025, when they suffered a 2-0 loss against Azam FC.

Since then, Barker’s side have been remarkably difficult to beat, compiling a sequence of 14 victories and seven draws.

That unbeaten run has provided the foundation for Simba’s title challenge and ensured that Yanga have been unable to establish a comfortable lead at the top of the table despite their own impressive campaign.

Sunday’s victory was also particularly significant because it represented Simba’s first win over Pamba Jiji this season.

When the two sides met in the first-round fixture at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza on March 19, 2026, they played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

After 26 league matches, Simba’s record now stands at 17 wins, seven draws and just one defeat.

Their tally of 61 points keeps them firmly in contention, although they remain two points behind defending champions Yanga, who continue to occupy top spot with 63 points.

For Pamba Jiji, the defeat was disappointing but does little to overshadow what has been a respectable season.

The club, remain seventh in the table with 33 points, having recorded eight wins, nine draws and nine defeats from their 26 matches.

Prisons Exact Revenge in Mbeya

Elsewhere on Sunday, Tanzania Prisons boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation after securing an important 3-1 victory over Dodoma Jiji at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.

The hosts made a dream start when former Dodoma Jiji player Heritier Lulihoshi converted a penalty in the fourth minute.

Oscar Mwajanga doubled the advantage just nine minutes later before star striker Jeremiah Juma added a third goal in the 66th minute to seal a memorable afternoon for the prison officers.

Dodoma Jiji managed to pull one back before the interval through prolific forward Waziri Junior in the 43rd minute, but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.

The victory carried extra significance for Tanzania Prisons as it served as revenge for the 1-0 defeat they suffered against the same opponents in the first-round meeting on January 22, 2026.

Despite claiming maximum points, Tanzania Prisons remain in 15th place with 23 points from 26 matches.

Their record now stands at six wins, five draws and 15 defeats as they continue their fight for survival.

Dodoma Jiji, meanwhile, stay eighth on the table with 33 points after recording eight victories, nine draws and nine losses during the campaign.

With only four rounds of fixtures left, every point is becoming increasingly valuable. While Tanzania Prisons are battling to avoid relegation, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the intense title duel between Simba and Yanga.

As the season enters its decisive stage, neither side appears willing to blink first.

The two football powerhouses continue to trade blows week after week, and with only two points separating them, the race for the 2025/26 Mainland Premier League title is heading towards a dramatic and potentially historic conclusion.
