Morocco once again demonstrated why they are regarded as one of Africa’s strongest football nations after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties to secure their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions showed remarkable resilience and determination to recover from a goal down before eventually prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout after the match had ended 1-1 following extra time.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again emerged as Morocco’s hero, producing a decisive save in the shootout before Ismail Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.
The victory continues Morocco’s impressive rise on the global stage following their historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, proving once again that they are among the strongest teams representing Africa.
Morocco dominate the opening stages
Although both teams started cautiously, Morocco quickly settled into the match and began controlling possession with confidence.
Captain Achraf Hakimi was once again at the centre of Morocco’s attacking play, making dangerous runs down the right flank while delivering crosses and set-pieces that repeatedly troubled the Dutch defence.
The Atlas Lions created the first clear opportunity in the 18th minute when Hakimi’s corner found Neil El Aynaoui, whose powerful header forced Bart Verbruggen into an excellent save.
Moments later, Hakimi collected the loose ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful effort that Verbruggen pushed away with difficulty.
Despite Morocco’s dominance, the Netherlands nearly struck before half-time when Micky van de Ven forced Bounou into another outstanding save to keep the scores level.
Hakimi hits the crossbar
Morocco resumed the second half with even greater attacking intent.
In the 52nd minute, Azzedine Ounahi played a perfectly weighted through ball that released Hakimi into the penalty area.
The Moroccan captain fired a fierce effort that crashed against the crossbar with Verbruggen beaten, leaving the travelling supporters frustrated.
Hakimi continued causing problems for the Dutch defence, while Morocco enjoyed long spells of possession and territorial advantage.
Gakpo punishes Morocco
Despite Morocco’s dominance, the Netherlands took the lead against the run of play in the 72nd minute.
A long ball created confusion inside Morocco’s defence before Crysencio Summerville kept the move alive.
The ball eventually reached Cody Gakpo, who finished first time beyond Bounou to hand the Dutch a 1-0 advantage.
It was a cruel setback for Morocco after producing the better football for much of the contest.
Ouahbi’s substitutions change the match
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi responded immediately by introducing fresh attacking options, including Soufiane Rahimi, Chemseddine Talbi, Anas Salah-Eddine, Yassine Jassim and Samir El Morabit.
The substitutions transformed Morocco’s attack, injecting fresh energy and increasing the pressure on the Netherlands during the closing stages.
Diop rescues the Atlas Lions
Morocco’s persistence was finally rewarded in stoppage time.
Talbi delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Issa Diop rose above Virgil van Dijk before powering a header into the net to level the scores.
The equaliser sparked wild celebrations among Moroccan supporters and ensured the tie would continue into extra time.
Extra time fails to separate the teams
Morocco remained the stronger side during extra time and came close to taking the lead when Soufiane Rahimi created space inside the penalty area, only to be denied by another superb save from Verbruggen.
As fatigue began affecting both teams, clear opportunities became increasingly rare, with neither side able to find the decisive goal.
The match therefore headed to a penalty shootout.
Bounou delivers once again
The shootout began with Neil El Aynaoui missing Morocco’s opening penalty before Rahimi calmly restored confidence by converting his effort.
Talbi also scored, while Hakimi struck the post with Morocco’s fourth penalty.
However, Bounou produced the decisive moment by saving Crysencio Summerville’s spot-kick, leaving Ismail Saibari with the opportunity to win the contest.
Saibari held his nerve and confidently converted the winning penalty to send Morocco into the Round of 16.
Canada await in the next round
Morocco will now face Canada after the co-hosts defeated South Africa 1-0 to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Having finished second in Group C with seven points behind Brazil on goal difference, the Atlas Lions have once again shown they are capable of competing with the world’s strongest nations.
Africa’s hopes remain alive
Morocco’s latest victory is another significant moment for African football.
Following their historic achievements at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated their quality, resilience and belief on the biggest stage.
With Bounou, Hakimi and a talented new generation leading the way, Morocco continue to carry Africa’s hopes and will now look to overcome Canada in pursuit of another historic World Cup campaign.
