This strategic partnership represents a milestone for both institutions as they seek to align their expertise in the blue economy sector

Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) has formalised a significant collaborative agreement with the Ankara University Research Centre for Maritime Law (DEHUKAM) of Türkiye, aimed at bolstering cooperation in maritime affairs and international maritime law.

This strategic partnership represents a milestone for both institutions as they seek to align their expertise in the blue economy sector.

During the signing ceremony, the Principal of DMI, Professor Tumaini Gurumo, emphasised that the memorandum of understanding is designed to strengthen ties in education, vocational training, and academic research.

She noted that these objectives are central to DMI’s core mission of providing world-class maritime education and ensuring that the industry is supported by a robust legal framework.

Professor Gurumo further explained that DMI holds the mandate to train seafarers and offer specialised courses in international trade and maritime law.

She highlighted that the partnership with DEHUKAM will significantly enhance the institute’s capacity to conduct high-level research and deliver advanced legal courses, ensuring students and professionals are equipped with global perspectives.

Expressing his optimism for the future of the partnership, the Chairman of the DEHUKAM Board, Mr Suleyman Onel, stated that he was delighted to enter into this agreement.

He underscored that the collaboration would yield mutual benefits for both institutions, fostering institutional growth and contributing to the broader development of the maritime sectors in Tanzania and Türkiye.

The Turkish Ambassador to Tanzania, Dr Bekir Gezer, also commended the initiative, describing the agreement as a vital step in strengthening the existing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Tanzania in ensuring the goals of the agreement are fully realised for the benefit of both parties.

As a result of this cooperation, Tanzania is poised to benefit from cutting-edge maritime legal research and the exchange of expertise with international scholars.

This move further solidifies DMI’s reputation as the premier institution in the country for maritime law, particularly as it continues to expand its postgraduate offerings in this specialised field.
